Nazir Tanbouli
Tuscany residency 2006
I work in figurative drawing and painting, particularly large scale work such as murals.
I received the award as a mid-career artist, four years after I moved to the UK, and eleven years since I graduated from the Alexandria Academy of Fine Art.
I used the residency at the Verrochio Centre as an opportunity to learn more directly about traditional art through immersion in the Tuscan landscape of Casole. I was interested in observing and recording my interpretations of the timeless rhythms of life in this hill-town landscape, and in living this life for the time I was there. I made a large number of line drawings on paper, capturing the complex Chirico-esque architecture as well as the rituals of daily life.
Following my two week stay in Casole, I used my travel fund to visit Florence, and ended the trip in Rome. In Rome I stayed with a group of Rome-based artists, and was not only able to experience the city but also the local artistic life.
The award was instrumental in developing my work, not least by affording me time and space to do a large number of drawings and photographs, and in allowing me to experience classical and Renaissance art in situ. The drawings and photographs I made on the residency are invaluable materials for me to work with.
I also appreciated being able to immerse myself for a month in the Italian atmosphere and lifestyle, which also was greatly conducive to my creative process.
