project funding 2007

Funding from the trust enabled me to make a piece of work which had lain dormant in my imagination for quite a while. It involved rather expensive materials such as two way mirror and UV lighting and the experimental nature of the piece made me nervous of taking the plunge. A solo exhibition at Custom House Studios in West Ireland where I am artist in residence provided the ideal venue. I created a completely darkened area of the gallery and the illusory image of the lace, which appeared to go on for ever, glowed disconcertingly in the centre of a cube made from the two way mirror. I wanted to make the connection between textile and architecture; an investigation which lies at the heart of my creative work. The piece generated plenty of interest and has demonstrated the potential of using this technique on a large scale.

Making this piece of work with the funding from JGT has been very rewarding. It is important to take creative risks and without your support I think the piece would have remained as an idea. The experiment worked and the endless stream of lace in the glass cube both delights and challenges the viewer. I had extremely positive feedback from the visitors to my exhibition and I am determined to take much further the visual connection between textile and architecture that the piece makes so eloquently.
