Emily Speed - artist
project funding 2005
I received a project grant in 2004 to assist with the cost of materials for my MA: Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art, although I didn't then use the money until 2006 due to deferring my place for a year. Tucked away until the very last few weeks of my MA, this money meant that I was able to get on with the most stressful time without having to earn, which at the end of such an intense year, was invaluable. I also used the award to buy power tools, which in turn created a small workshop area in my exhibition space for the lead up to the final show.
My work is concerned with buildings and the way that architecture can act as a metaphor for our internal selves (the body as a building that houses the mind). Minute environments and micro-architectures can often be found within my work; these are usually either in drawings or models contained within a larger sculpture or reassembled piece of furniture. I am interested in exploring the enduring sense of memory and/or personal identity that is often embedded into or linked with built space. The models and micro-architectures are a way of modelling myself, a kind of internal, immaterial architecture.
