Emily Johns
project funding
Last year I responded to an offer of funding by the Juliet Gomperts Trust which was advertised at the back of Artist Newsletter. I was looking (I thought in vain) for trusts that might support a project I was working on called “Drawing Paradise on the ‘Axis of Evil’” about Britain’s contemporary and historical relationship with Iran. I couldn’t have found a lovelier trust to work with. Not only did they give me money to travel to Iran at the height of international tension last May, and contributed to the development of an exhibition which is now touring the country; the JGT also offered a warm, personal interest in my work, and an ongoing relationship in the manner of traditional arts patrons. A rare thing in this age of funding with strings.
