Jane Howard
project funding 2007
The funding I received from the trust went into producing my final year exhibition piece for my Fine Art Sculpture degree at Brighton University.
‘Shelf’ (2007) is a charcoal stained chunk of lime wood, the setting for a collection of objects. Functional like a mantle piece, but planned and carved into, the shelf itself is half domestic setting, half sculptural pedestal. Found objects are detached from their usual experience, placed in a subtle arrangement creating a dialogue with objects that I have made. Pillars of cotton pads seem structural amongst the horizon of other objects including make-up products, photographs and bottles. The shelf is curated daily, like a mini exhibition. I constantly add to and take away. Viewing it close up or from a distance, the objects disparities of scale, hierarchy and colour.
I am interested in what objects do represent and what they can represent. The shelf is a display of smaller things representing bigger things. It is a landscape and portrait of the artist’s mind’s eye.
