project funding 2002

I received project funding under the title “Metal and Drawing” while I was working on a series of large-scale etchings as part of an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell College of Arts in 2002.

I applied for £400 towards materials costs (metal and paper) for a final series of works about journeys. The works were realised using a combination of deeply-bitten zinc plates, photo-etching and chine-collé.

The funding really helped at a time when my work could have been limited by the expenses of the materials involved. As a result I was able to work uninhibited on a large scale and produce far more ambitious work than would otherwise have been possibile.

Tuscany residency 1995

I received the Juliet Gomperts Memorial Bursary to work at the Centro d’Arte Verrocchio when I was at the beginning of my artistic career in June 1994. The residency provided a very valuable opportunity for me to generate a large body of work and focus my aims for the future.

The Centro is situated on the edge of a small hilltop town, offering plenty of possibilities for working en plein air. At first I was overwhelmed by the extraordinary scenery, the colours, and the quality of the light, and didn’t know where or how to start interpreting it all. By going out and painting on site, I made many small paintings which were eventually peiced together as a 360° panoramic view of the landscape around Casole d’Elsa.
