My work is about the body, both ancient and modern and challenges the viewer to enter into intimate and playful dialogue, to reconsider what is human, what organic, what manufactured, what magical?
It is based on a broad spectrum of anatomical and medical research including the impact biotechnology, the complexity of the psyche and the power of faith.
I create ambitious 3D sculptures and installations, incorporating found and objects which I construct myself which are made from large personal collections of found materials (from plant roots, flotsam, weathered plastics, glass, wood, metal, textiles). My making processes include drawing, painting, woodwork, metalwork, sewing, binding. Though it may be goal directed, the end result is discovered in the process rather than pre-imposed.
Since 2002 I have created a body of work which was premiered in a solo show entitled "Nosce Te Ipsum" at UH Galleries, Hatfield in November 2006, (supported by an Arts Council England grant).
I wanted to bring this work into a central London location easily accessible to the general public and galleries, aiming for a wider viewing. The award from the Juliet Gomperts Trust was one of a number of forms of financial support including small-scale business sponsorship which enabled me to do this.
“Nosce Te Ipsum - tempus fugit” was presented at The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London from 15 to 25 November 2007 and showed all the previous works along with major new pieces including animation, soundscapes, and collaborations, mime, performance and poetry.
